Reading Assessment 1

Types of Photographs

The main idea of this reading is that that photography is divided into two main categories: science and art. From these two categories, photographers divide their art into different, more specific, categories to keep organized. These categories also help the viewer interpret the photographers work. It is important to the photographer for the viewer to interpret their work so that they stay interested. Some of the discussed categories are scientific, interpretive, ethnically evaluative, aesthetically evaluative, and theoretical. Scientific pictures are purely explanatory with accuracy and fact. Interpretive pictures are self expressive and show the viewer information about the photographer and how they see the world. Ethnically evaluative photographs show emotions on past events while presenting the event that happened while still leaving interpretation open for the viewer. Aesthetically evaluative photos is an art photography that captures "beautiful things in beautiful ways" commonly faceless nudes, still lives, and landscape. Theoretical photographs are photos that talk about issues of making art and producing artistic ideas as well as politics of art and representation modes.

From this reading, I learned how photographs are categorized by other photographers and how they use these categories to express their work.  I looked at different photographs and contrasted them through their media and content. From this, I learned how aesthetics differ from artist to artist. I also learned what my ideal photography aesthetic is. My photography aspires to be aesthetically evaluative. I appreciate and strive for beauty and the most beautiful way of displaying and expressing it.
